Houghton Mid Century Inspired - 5 bedroom and 6 bath - 5100 square feet on a 9100 square foot view lot
This beautiful mid-century inspired new build was a fun and challenging project. The city required a lot of site work, road work, and storm system upgrades that haven't been required on past projects; it added time and money to the scope of this project. This street and neighborhood are nicely maintained and pride of ownership is evident everywhere. We loved building here because the neighbors are so friendly and welcoming. We wanted to keep the mid-century aesthetic so that this large new build didn't stick out and change the neighborhood too much. We think it fits in nicely while still giving buyers in this area what they want. The extensive stone work and the wood accents elevate the exterior. It is 5100 square feet with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. It has an abundance of natural light and we positioned the windows to maximize that light as well as the city, lake, and mountain views. Despite all the windows the house is still extremely private.
We love all the angles in this house. The sloped ceilings and two story kitchen ceiling add so much interest. Building in Houghton is tough because the height limits are low to protect views. Giving buyers the views, high ceilings, and lots of square footage they want presents a challenge but with this project we were definitely able to deliver.
Of course this house has a large scullery and a warm and inviting kitchen but we decided to try something a little different. We put the main (and very large) refrigerator/freezer in the scullery and added a beverage fridge and a two drawer under counter fridge in the main kitchen. There is still plenty of fridge space in the kitchen for essentials but the bulk of the items can be stored back in the scullery. The kitchen feels much more open without the big refrigerators taking up space. We also added a second island in the kitchen which is great for prep or makes a perfect buffet.
This house is built for entertaining. The lower level rec room and theater with adjoining wet bar are a cozy place to hang out and watch movies while the loft bonus space with wet bar and roof deck are a great place to watch the sunset over the lake and mountains. So many options!
A large stone fireplace and custom designed and built slat railing add a wow factor to the great room. The stone fireplace is imported Australian stone which was painstakingly hand chiseled to achieve the ungrouted random stack look we wanted. The white oak railing stained to match the floors is a mid-century nod while still contemporary. The use of terrazzo tile, zellige tile, porcelain, and quartz combined to give the house a timeless appeal. We love to tastefully mix styles, metals, materials, lighting, and anything else we can think of to make each house unique and timeless. This beauty is definitely one of a kind!
